(In honor of America’s Veterans)
The room was filled with flowers
And the music softly played.
The soldier lay in his casket
With the flag his gallant spray.
Though no one else could hear the words
That softly floated to his ears,
The flag said, “Sir I give thanks today
For all your service years.
It matters not what time or place
Nor in what branch you served.
I’m here to pay to you today
The respect that you deserve.
You pledged allegiance to me once
And forever kept your word.
In times of war and those of peace
Your devotion was undeterred.
So as they lay you down today
At your final resting place,
My thirteen stripes and fifty stars
Will proudly fly with grace.”
Though no one else could hear the words
Softly spoken in the breeze
The soldier watched down from above
And said, “Old Glory, rest at ease.”
