A New Understanding...

My husband and I, along with two of his siblings and their spouses went to see “Lone Survivor” yesterday.  If you haven’t seen the movie, I will not give anything away in this blog…obviously we all know the plot and how it all ended, but there is a lot to be learned as the movie plays out.  This movie was based on a true event, and I do realize that probably not everything was factual and that some facts were probably omitted.  Still, it really makes me think about things in a different light. While I am still not completely convinced that war is an answer, I now fully realize that there are people in other countries that do need help and protection, even from their “own people.”  And that there are people in the midst of a war-ravaged country that are willing to help protect American soldiers, even at the risk of losing their own life and the lives of their family members.  I now also realize that our soldiers are in a constant battle, not only with a physical enemy, but in making life or death decisions for themselves and for their comrades each and every day.  I don’t think it was only me that became aware of all of this, because at the start of the movie you could hear lots of whispering, popcorn crunching and pop being slurped through straws. But as the movie was ending, other than hearing sniffling throughout the theatre, it was completely silent.  I’m not sure I even heard anyone speak as we were walking out of the theatre.

So, to all those in any branch of the Armed Forces of United State of America--past, present or future--you have a job that the highest salary and a million “thank-you’s” would never be enough for, yet you are willing to give the highest sacrifice if and when the time comes.  Many already have.
